URQUHART CASTLE
30 miles south
west of Water's Edge
|
| On the north shore of Loch Ness just off the
A82 is the substantial ruin of the mainly 16th-century Urquhart Castle, once
the home of the chiefs of Clan Grant. It is open to the public as an Ancient
Monument. Loch Ness is more than 20 miles long and rarely more than a mile
in width and plunges to a greatest recorded depth of almost 1,000 feet. The
waters are peat-dark and impenetrable by even the most powerful submarine
lights, they never freeze and it is no wonder that stories abound of an
unidentified monster inhabiting its depths. |
