Durness

Durness is on the most northerly coast of Scotland,  107 miles north of Water's Edge. The area can be visited for the day from  Inverness, on the way visits can be made to the surrounding small villages. Smoo Cave is in the area which is of particular interest. The inner caves are accessible by raft for a small charge to see the dramatic 80ft (24m) waterfall in the rear cavern which is called Allt Smoo.

John Lennon visited Durness many times during his childhood years, his aunt lived in a cottage close to the sea. The memorial garden built in is memory  is lovely to see.

Close by Durness is Balnakeil Craft Village, it used to be a Ministry of Defence Early Warning Station but is now occupied by a group of craft workers, there are various shops and places to eat some with excellent home baking. The  various shops have interesting hand made things to sell, including  candles, paintings, woodwork and pottery. Durness is best enjoyed for its wild open headlands and long white magnificent sandy   beaches, with outcrops of rocks  and at low tide many rock pools. From early spring until June, colonies of puffins can be seen around Faraid Head. For more information try the Durness village web page, published Durness Community Council. Durness is very beautiful, one of our very favourite places to visit, magnificent scenery, wonderful walks in all seasons.
